| These
boats were well suited to teaching, more so than the small charter
boats used in the past. Port Townsend is a Mecca for boaters, with
boat building schools, the Wooden Boat Foundation and talented boat
wrights, riggers and sail-makers, many of whom are women.
The
on-the-water seminars sold out with 65 posts filed on Saturday,
September 28th. Over 75 women attended the classroom seminars
on Sunday, the 29th. As in the past, a terrific team of women
coaches and teachers participated. Michelle Borowski, did the
lion's share of the organizing. A resident of Port Townsend,
Michelle was able to draw on the strong women's sailing community
there to teach on-the-water and in the classroom. Betsi Beem's
"Rules of the Road" was both entertaining and
informative. Beth Steinkoenig's "Navigation" was an
excellent overview. The diesel repair seminar led by Aletia
Alvarez, complete with engine in the room, received rave
reviews.
The on-the-water spinnaker clinics by Liane Davison, Sharon
Divison, Michelle Boroski and Nora Petrich and hands-on sail repair
class by Carol Hasse, all new this year, were a big
success.
