Stories and Scenes from 2002 AdventureSail® Events

June 8, 2002
Hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club
Marblehead, MA

NWSA Coordinator:  Sue Corl, escorl@attbi.com

Twenty young girls from Girls Inc in Lynn were treated to a sail on the America's Cup 12-meter yacht, Valiant, learned some knots with NWSA President Diana Smith and listened enthralled to Katherine O'Connell tell about her voyage on the Southern Ocean as part of the 2000-2001 BT Global Challenge crew.  All the girls were identified by their azalea T-shirts.  This was Marblehead's first AdventureSail®; but the 6th in the region.

July 21, 2002 - South Hampton, N.Y.
Hosted by:  Breakwater Yacht Club
NWSA Coordinator:  Valli Cook
Co-chairs: Charlene Kagel, CGKPCA@aol.com, and Carol Morse

This is the third year Breakwater Yacht Club has hosted an AdventureSail® day.  As in the past the day included racing as part of the Yacht Club's event.  Each participant went home with a beautiful trophy.  An excellent lunch was served. The day was exciting, rewarding and thrilling for the kids.  Best of all this is a program which the BYC members are excited about taking part.

The members of the Breakwater Yacht Club have demonstrated a strong commitment to giving children in the Hamptons community an opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing. This year Bruce Tait, member of Breakwater Board of Directors and chair of the Fundraising Committee, announced the availability of scholarships for those children who participated in the AdventureSail® day.  The  scholarship is a week of free sailing lessons.  Several scholarships will be available for next summer's participation.

This program is a success because of the diligent and attentive work of co-chairs Carol Morse and Charlene Kagel and boat owners who shared their boats and time.

Coordinator: Denise Smith,   dannteach@aol.com

The Rudder Club of Orange Park opened up its club for 34 Big and Little Sisters of Northeast Florida for a day of sailing.  Ten captains, all members of the North Florida Cruising Club, volunteered to take out the girls on the St. Johns River. Prior to departure, women from the Northeast Florida Women's Sailing Network gave a presentation on boat safety and a quick lesson on boat parts.  All girls received AdventureSail T-shirts and Sailing Smart.  The day concluded with a big spaghetti dinner and an awards ceremony with participation certificates.
