OBITUARY FOR SUE CORL, SECRETARY

February, 2007. Elizabeth S. (“Sue) Corl, age 62, of Marblehead, daughter of Mabel Smith and the late James P. Smith of Almont MI, died Saturday, February 24th in Salem Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Almont, MI, she graduated from Almont High School and received her B.B. A. from The University of Michigan where she majored in marketing. Sue’s professional career began as a Media Coordinator in the Marblehead Public Schools where she taught basic computer skills to students in grades K-12. When she moved into the business arena, Sue’s skills as a coordinator and analyst lead her to the business systems analyst field. She was employed by American Mutual Insurance Company, Eastern Connection, Policy Management Systems Corp, Bank of Boston, TSSG, ITT New England Management and finally First Notice Systems in Charlestown, MA.

Sue remained active in her local community for over 30 years. When her daughters were young, she was the Director of the North Shore Girl Scout Camp, Camp Shore Lee, for six years. As a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, Sue served on its race committee. She was the sponsorship chairman for Marblehead Race Week for seven years. Sue crewed in the Town Class, Shields and Sonar fleets. She was an active member of the Marblehead Sail and Power Squadron.

She was the secretary of the National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) and co-chair of the Women’s Sailing Conference and national co-coordinator of the AdventureSail® program, a program to introduce sailing to young girls at risk. Sue was a supportive board member who took the initiative on many NWSA key issues. She was a strong advocate for many of the programs and events which proved to be beneficial to NWSA. As a member of the executive board of NWSA, Sue’s opinions were valued and helped expand the number of participants in the AdventureSail® program.

Sue was witty, clever, artistic and had a natural flare for embellishing any occasion. She enjoyed cooking. Gardening was a lifelong hobby. Sue maintained a Victory Garden plot each summer in Marblehead.

She leaves her dear friend and companion, of 14 years, Joan Thayer; daughter Susan Corl and her partner, Dan Stein,of San Francisco, CA; daughter R. Jane Maynard and her husband Greg and their son Riley of Manchester, NH; brother James Smith and his wife Sue of Grayling, MI; sister Claudia Juif and her husband Richard, of Grayling, MI.; and former husband, R. Brooks Corl of Millis, MA.

A wake will be held Wednesday, February 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, MA. The funeral service will be Thursday, March 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Old North Church in Marblehead. Flowers are welcomed.
