History

Doris Colgate, President of Offshore Sailing School, founded the National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) in 1990. The mission of the association was to provide opportunities for women to learn and enhance their sailing skills and have fun and meet others at the same time. The mission has not changed. Our programs, such as the Take the Helm® conferences and our hands-on workshops, such as the Diesel Engine Workshops, Introduction to Navigation, various workshops in Marblehead, MA., North Kinsgstown, RI and elsewhere, have provided the opportunity for thousands of women to do just that. NWSA a program of the Women’s Sailing Foundation.

Sue Corl, secretary of NWSA from 1997 to 2007 was the co-founder of the Women’s Sailing Conference in 2002, national co-coordinator of the AdventureSail® program, and co-event chair of the event in Boston, MA from its inception in 1996. In 2015, the board of directors of the Women’s Sailing Foundation established the Sue Corl Youth Scholarship in Sue Corl’s memory. The Scholarship will be awarded for a program or event identified by the Women’s Sailing Foundation Board of Directors as being appropriate for this scholarship. It is not an annual scholarship.
